The Best Thing to Happen to Book Club Since Boxed-Wine: “Fifty Shades of Grey”
Looking for an idea for your book club this month? Look no further than “Fifty Shades of Grey” by E.L. James. This week, we bring you our first book review courtesy of Rachel, one of our panelists. Find out why “Fifty Shades of Grey” is putting a smile on the faces of husbands across the country.
As a wife and mother of three kids, my life is full of color! I see red when my in-laws stop by unannounced; I feel blue when the day seems to never end; I blush pink when my husband tells me I look beautiful; and I turn green with envy when my single friend tells me about her latest spa treatment. But the one color on my mind these days is GREY! 50 SHADES OF GREY, to be exact!
I first heard about the book and its sexy plot from other moms. Each time someone mentioned the title they would start to blush and smile from ear-to-ear. Wow! I’ll have what she’s having!!!
As I delved into the book I was not surprised by the plot: Anastasia Steele, a young innocent girl (smart, unattached, and ignorant to her striking beauty) meets Christian Grey, a gorgeous, rich, single guy (with no raging STDs and/or permanent bite marks) and the sparks fly. That’s your traditional “boy meets girl” romance novel love fest. 50 Shades of Grey, on the other hand, takes the lovemaking from “vanilla” to a spicy, hot-flash inducing, “am I blushing” kind of erotica.
At first, I was a little uneasy about the erotica theme; even embarrassed that I was reading such graphic material. But then I couldn’t put the book down. It was like accidentally flipping to HBO during one of their “Real Sex” shows and then not being able to look away. I had no idea this stuff could actually turn me on. Did I really want to read about some control-freak billionaire who wants to seduce and dominate? The answer is apparently, yes! As it turns out (spoiler alert), the book has a lot more bark than bite, and we end up with a sexy mix of hard-core pillow talk and creative gymnastics.
I’ll be honest, the writing will not be honored by the critics, but boy did I enjoy reading it. It was a fun, sexy fantasy and made my libido stand up and take notice. My husband thinks it’s the greatest book I’ve ever read. Funny, he’s never really taken notice of my library choices in the past; And I think I saw him “friend” E L James on Facebook yesterday. Strange?!?!
50 Shades of Grey has received a lot of National media attention recently. In fact is is currently #1 on the New York Times Best seller list. The academics and politicians are having a field day with the implications of a book that glorifies the male domination of a woman. Puh-lease!!! We all know far too well that Women really do wear the pants in our families. I, for one, wouldn’t mind a bit of sensual forethought from my husband with the end goal being my utter and complete sexual pleasure. That’s sure to make my bedroom fantasies anything but grey.
